Cast lead bullets intended for use in rifles and higher velocity pistol ammunition often need gas checks to protect the bases and prevent leading of the bore. It is a well tried and tested way to shoot cast bullets at higher velocities, but the conventional copper gas checks, shown in the picture on the left, do not work well in all applications and have become very expensive. It is not suprising, therefore, that many shooters are looking for alternatives.
